Mary Simmons Aldridge, age 101, of 1619 E. Elm Street, Goldsboro died at home Friday.

Mary Simmons Aldridge was born in Wayne County on January 7, 1912 to the late Fannie Greenfield Southerland and Frank Southerland. She was called home at the age of 101 in the early morning on July 19, 2013 at her home.

She was a dedicated wife and mother. She was married to Ellie Simmons, Sr. until his death in 1943. Mary married James Earl Aldridge who preceded her in death in 1975.

She was introduced to Christ at a very early age by her grandfather who was a minister. Mary had a strong faith in God and joined the First Congregational Church in 1932 under the leadership of Rev. J. Taylor Stanley. Out of the union of both marriages, eleven children were born and was introduced to Christ through Sunday School, weekly Vacation Bible School, regular church attendance and other church activities at the First Congregational Church in Dudley, North Carolina.

Mary believed that education was of great value and provided her children the opportunity to be successful by attending institutions of higher learning.

Mary was preceded in death by four children: Evangeline S. Mitchell, Lawrence Simmons, Edward Chase Simmons and Elmon Clayton Simmons.

Loving memories are cherished by two sons: Ellie Simmons, Jr. and James Earl Aldridge, Jr. (Irene); five daughters: Delores Lorease Johnson, Andra Barbara Aldridge, Veronica Fennell (Ralph), Glenda Bryant (Carl) and Consuelo Baker (Horace). She is survived by one brother, William Southerland; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Simmons; 18 grandchildren; 10 great grand children, one great-great grandchild and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
