Funeral services for Mr. Batts is scheduled for Monday, June 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Disciples of Christ Church of Christ in Faro, NC. Viewing will be Sunday from 2-7 p.m. and the family will be present from 6-7 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel in Goldsboro, NC.

Lester Ray Batts was born February 2, 1955 in Greene County, North Carolina to Bertha L. Batts and the late William Henry Batts. He was preceded in death by his father, William Henry Batts, three brothers, Jimmy Don Batts, Timothy Batts and David A. Batts.

Lester grew up in the Faro, North Carolina community. He was the 12th born of 15 children. Lester was strong-willed and fought the good fight of faith during his illness. But on June 6, 2012 he took his rest.

Lester attended elementary and middle school at Norwayne School. He graduated from Charles B. Aycock High School, Pikeville, NC. As a child he attend St. Mark Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ in Faro, NC where he also joined and was baptized at a young age. He resided many year in Baltimore, MD and eventually united with Second Shiloh Church of Christ, Disciple of Christ and participated by singing in the choir.

Lester was adventurous, enjoyed traveling and loved to drive. After high school, he set out on his life's journey. He spent several years in Brooklyn, NY and later settled in Baltimore, MD. There in Maryland, he spent a number years working with General Motors, Inc. He later began driving 18 wheelers for various companies and eventually purchased his own rig. Lester loved traveling and being out on the open highway driving his truck until his health began to fail. He ultimately decided to move back to North Carolina in 2006 and renewed his faith in God.

He leaves to chrish his memory his mother, Bertha Lee Batts of Pikeville, NC, wife Joan Batts of Baltimore, MD, one son, LaVar Batts of New Jersey; four daughters: LaKeisha Hall-Davis of Pikeville, NC, Nicole Gibson, Tia Rose (Jaired, Jr.) and Cherise Batts all of Baltimore, MD; ten greandchildren, six sisters: Peggry Green, Edna Artis, both of Goldsboro, NC, Gale Shiver (William) of Greenville, NC, Bertha Mae Fenwick (Charles) of Accokeek, MD, Nellie Faye Batts and Patricia Ann Batts, both of Baltimore, MD,; five brothers, Harold Lee Batts (Jean) of Wilson, NC, Gregory Batts (Gena) Goldsboro, NC, William Boyd Batts (Marie), Johnny Russell Batts (Debbie), Terry Lee Batts (Shirley) all of Maryland; two aunts, Mollie Yelverton and Yvonne Yelverton both of Goldsboro, NC, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
